Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

We present a dare for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like conventional physical horror, but within Together lies a deep contemplation about how we choose to love one another.

A Debut Feature Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the actors bring a unique chemistry to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The story commences when Millie and Tim relocate from the big city to the countryside for her career. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, of course, but that’s mostly where the conventions cease. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their new home, a storm hits, and the two tumble into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a strange force takes hold of the pair. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The whole movie is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and delivers them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and far away from his network of friends. He is terrified of the concept of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision is that he refrains from painting either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie face the type of challenges that are inherent in most partnerships a decade in. At their core, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory avoids being overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that single viewers have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can undertake today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu as of this moment.
